Sukuk vs. Shares: How they differ
| Sukuk | Shares | |
|---|---|---|
| What you own | Contribute capital to a real asset or project | A piece of the company itself, for as long as you hold it |
| How you earn | Regular payments at a rate agreed from the start | Dividends (if paid) plus any rise in the share price, neither is guaranteed |
| How risky | Lower, as your money is repaid at maturity/end date of the Sukuk | Higher, as dividend may be suspended and the share price may fall. |
| Getting my money returned | Your money will be repaid on the end date, or when you sell on Nasdaq Dubai | No automatic repayment. Only when you sell your shares will you be repaid |
| Price swings | Usually fairly steady | Can move up and down a lot |
| Shariah-compliant? | Yes, by design, and confirmed by a Fatwa from a Sharia Scholar | Possibly, if the company qualifies, but not by design |
